This is a hymn by Stuart Townend that is based on Psalm 27. Hearing John Piper talk about God is the Gospel and thinking about the question, what is my ideal paradise led me to remembering this song. Here’s a comment I recently made on facebook to the question, ‘What is your ideal paradise?’, that led me to putting this song on repeat on my iTunes.
Was listening to piper about his book God is the Gospel. That we may think of paradise in these terms (having all that we want, e.g. no pain, no tears, all that good stuff that we ever want) and it’s scary that God is not in our paradise. I’ll take all the good stuff in paradise, oh, God is not there? no problem, I’ll still take it. Might be better that He’s not there!
“One thing that I ask O Lord, this will I pray
To dwell in your house O Lord everyday
To gaze upon your lovely face and rest in the Father’s embrace”-Stuart Townend
Here’s John Piper’s introduction in the free e-book, God is the Gospel.
Today—as in every generation—it is stunning to watch the shift away from God as the all-satisfying gift of God’slove. It is stunning how seldom God himself is proclaimed as the greatest gift of the gospel. But the Bible teaches that the best and final gift of God’s love is the enjoyment of God’s beauty. “One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORDall the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquirein his temple” (Ps. 27:4). The best and final gift of the gospel is that we gain Christ. “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ” (Phil. 3:8). This is the all-encompassing gift of God’s love through the gospel—to see and savor the glory of Christ forever.
The Father’s Embrace (You Are My Anchor) by Stuart Townend.
You are my Anchor
My Light and my Salvation
You are my Refuge
My heart will not fear
Though my foes surround me
On every hand
They will stumble and fall
While in grace I stand
In my day of trouble
You hide me and set me above
To sing this song of love
One thing I will ask of You this will I pray
To dwell in Your house O Lord every day
To gaze upon Your lovely Face
And rest in the Father’s embrace
Teach me Your way Lord
Make straight the path before me
Do not forsake me my hope is in You
As I walk through life I am confident
I will see Your Goodness with every step
And my heart directs me to seek You
In all that I do
So I will wait for You
