Last weekend in Living Praise, we have been hearing God’s Word from Deuteronomy 5-The Ten Commandments. It was a delight to hear that the Commandments are NOT a list of ‘do’s and don’ts’. The reason is because the law of God follows the Grace of God. Christopher Ash in his book Bible Delight helpfully shows this gracious and wonderful truth of God’s law.
““And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,” (Deuteronomy 10:12, ESV)
The words (‘law’ and ‘commandments’) are two-way words whose first direction is grace. They are words that create and sustain relationships. We see this very clearly in Deuteronomy 10:12f, where keeping the ‘commandments and statutes’ is equivalent to fearing the LORD God, walking in all his ways, loving him, and serving him with a whole heart and soul. To keep the Covenant word is not, and never was, ticking the boxes of a legal checklist. Always it was intended to be a matter of the heart. -Christopher Ash, Bible Delight p.36
