Back To Reality?
THE HONEYMOON is over. All the anticipation of coming to Bible college has been replaced by anxiety of completing all the assignments. Any excitement of being in a new environment has fizzled way before the last class of the week. What is left are memories of the wonderful time that we enjoyed at our College Retreat somewhere far in Changi Village Hotel. Back to reality, our principal said. Readings, assignments and due dates are now a reality. Rest, recreation and relaxation are now a luxury.

The Reality of Life.
Be it a holiday or a new gadget, reality will set in. Some holidays leave travellers so tired that often they need another holiday to recover. The wonders of a new gadget will last as long as its dismal battery life. The joys of being a father for the first time will be accompanied with the constant cries of his firstborn. So here’s my reflection from week 1 at Singapore Bible College: Real lasting joy is not found in places but in a Person – Jesus Christ.

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11, ESV)

The Ultimate Reality of Life
It is in Jesus Christ alone where one will find fullness of joy. The pleasures that Jesus offers is unlike the joys of the world, for at God’s right hand are pleasures forever. They will never perish, spoil or fade. Steven Curtis Chapman, one of my favourite Christian songwriters, expresses it well in his song, ‘More to This Life’.

So where do we start to find every part
Of what makes this life complete?
If we turn our eyes to Jesus we’ll find
Life’s true beginning is there at the Cross
Where He died

May God grant me the joy to devote my life everyday to know Jesus in His Word, to depend on Jesus by prayer and to follow Jesus with all of my heart. May God help me find life’s ultimate reality in Christ and Christ alone.

Back to reality? No. I never left.
